I’m living proof that you don’t have to be good at Math to homeschool.
This was a fear of mine when we first started. I did not get an A in Math, I don’t even think I got a B. Math was super hard for me. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to teach my kids properly if I didn’t understand Math. The Math that I did understand, I wasn’t sure how to teach it to them in a way that they would understand. But, now I’ve been homeschooling for over 5 years and my boys are pretty good at Math.
If the fear of teaching your child Math is keeping you from homeschooling please don’t let it! You don’t have to be good at Math. All you need is to provide the material for your kids to learn and guide them though it. With the right curriculum, all you have to do is set your kids up and they will learn.
Today I am going to share with you 3 ways you can homeschool Math when you feel like you have no idea what your doing. Your kids will be learning the right material and they will be learning it correctly. Yes, even if you didn’t make A’s or B’s in math class.
HOW TO HOMESCHOOL MATH WHEN YOUR NOT GOOD AT MATH
1. Use an online math curriculum
With an online Math curriculum, you don’t have to do much of anything. We started using Teaching Textbooks this year and we all love it. My 8 year old actually ask to do Math now. It’s kind of amazing. Teaching Textbooks keeps up with their progress and their grades. The animated lessons keep them engaged and I know they are learning what they need to. The greatest part is this is available from 3rd all the way through Highschool! As long as I feel like my kids are learning what they need, we will continue to use this program.
For Pre-K- Kindergarten we used ABCMOUSE.COM This program is awesome. The lessons and games are so fun. There is a personal lesson path set up for each child. All of my boys used this program.
2. Use a math curriculum with lessons on DVD
One of the most popular math programs is Math U See. I have heard so many great things about this curriculum. Each book comes with recorded lessons on DVD. The lessons are recorded by a real teacher. All you have to do is sit back and have your kids watch the DVD. If they need extra guidance, you can watch the lessons with your child. The only reason I ended up not using this program is because I wasn’t a fan of the price. If its within your budget, I think its worth looking into.
3. Use the Teachers Manual
I have yet to find a Math curriculum that didn’t come with a Teachers Manual. Most teachers manuals will tell you word from word what to say to your child. Each lesson will be planned out for you, in detail. If you don’t want to do math online or use DVD’s. That’s ok! You may have to spend a little extra to get the Teachers Manual, but if your not sure how to do something, its a good option. You don’t have to be good at Math, the Teachers Manual will guide you.
The point of this article was to show that you can homeschool your child. You don’t have to let the fear of not remembering how to do math perfectly keep you from homeschooling. You can use online curriculums, math curriculums on DVD, or purchase a teachers manual. Forget about the C’s you made in Math class. With guidance and the right material your kids will learn everything they need to about Math. Don’t let math keep you from homeschooling. You got this!
